Non-project Donations

Help & Shelter is very grateful to all those who have made donations in cash or in kind to us over the years. These donations have played and continue to play a vital part in supporting activities not covered by project funds and in providing much-needed furnishings, office and computer equipment for both the crisis service and shelter and supplies of food, toiletries and clothing for the shelter.

All donations – big or small – are gratefully accepted and acknowledged. We are equally happy to publicise assistance received or to respect the wishes of donors who prefer to remain anonymous

The second hunt on 28 June 2009 might not have been as well patronised as the first, but the 11 teams all had fun and thanks to Denise Dias’s ingenuity, pledges of donations totaling $44,000 a month for the next 12 months were obtained, together with donations of books, jigsaw puzzles and basic toiletries packages for the shelter.

In addition registration fees and the sale of hot dogs and drinks brought in over $80,000.

On Sunday, 21 April 2013, Help & Shelter held a Salute to Mothers Brunch at the Georgetown Club.

Dave Martins and friends provided entertainment, Colleen Reis gave a beauty presentation and items were raffled and auctioned.

The event was extremely well-attended and thanks to the tireless efforts of Denise Dias and her helpers, and the donation of the venue, entertainment, beauty presentation and raffle and auction items, it raised just over $950,000.

The funds will be of vital use in enabling us to continue work that it is not currently project funded.

On 22 January 2013 Red Entertainment donated $100,000 to Help & Shelter as part of the proceeds of their successful Old Year’s Night party. Red Entertainment was recently established by Chelsea Fung, a niece of our chairperson Denise Dias, and Kristina King and Saskia Wyngaarde, and the Old Year’s Night party was their second event.

They plan to hold 3 events a year and, as with their first 2 events, to donate part of the proceeds to charity.

Donation by Lucas and Ethan Jonas

On 17 May 2012, Lucas and Ethan Jonas, 9 and 6 year old Marian Academy students, presented a donation of $117,000 to assist Help & Shelter in its work against violence in the home.

Lucas and Ethan raised the money from the sale of their DVD collection and by then persuading both Digicel CEO Gregory Dean and their father to match their proceeds.

The funds will be used to reprint child abuse posters developed under Help & Shelter’s recently concluded child protection project.

On 28 December 2011 twenty five teams took part in our fourth scavenger hunt and had great fun. $546,000 was raised from entries, donations, the bar and food. Grateful thanks again to Denise & Dennis Dias for the use of their garden as the hunt base and to all those who helped Denise with the organising and judging.

From Guyana Chronicle of 23 July, 2011
COURTS Guyana Inc., in a tangible show of support for the humanitarian organization, Help and Shelter, Wednesday donated $300,000 to assist the programme’s day-to-day activities. A cheque for the amount was issued to the organization by Courts Public Relations Officer, Zeya Nasir-Ramnauth, during a handing over ceremony at the company’s Main Street facility.
