Support for the delivery of prevention and community-based referral services for migrant and host communities in Guyana (UNICEF)

Help & Shelter in collaboration with Guyana Legal Aid Clinic (GLAC) will receive approximately $8.5 million in UNICEF Support for an 8-month project, commencing June 2019, which focuses on violence prevention and family and child protection and support for migrants and vulnerable host communities in 3 regions. The Project Action will be implemented in communities in region 3, 4 and 1 the target communities will be Durban Backlands, Mon Repos /Good Hope, Wales and Mabaruma / Kamaka. The implementation focus is based on provision of legal and other services, referral support, public education and strengthening community-based mechanisms for the safety of families and protection of children

Project activities will be as follows:

  1. Supporting awareness on local laws on violence and how to report.
  2. Providing referrals to State and other Agencies.             
  3. Providing support- where possible- to specific cases that will be referred directly to Help and Shelter
  4. Supporting awareness on local laws on violence and how to report.  (e.g.  through PSA and social media – including with Spanish translations, community outreaches)
  5. Identifying and documenting information on cases that require legal assistance and any specific court interventions. Providing support- where possible- to the cases that will be referred to the child   advocacy centre in the Regions                                                                                                                                                                             
  6. Providing support for documentation of experiences - videos, human interest stories etc. how to report.
  7. Providing referrals to State and other Agencies in the area of child protection
  8. Providing support- where possible- to specific cases that will be referred directly to Legal Aid
